Costello-Events > The first of the packages has arrived, and you can't imagine our excitement! Running with hands flailing in the air, screaming at the top of our lungs, leaping for joy...okay, so not quite that crazy, but American goodies never tasted so sweet! Well, we're not actually eating the shirts and cds, but you know what I mean.

Costello-Events > Traditional African architecture. This is the ceiling in the "family room" at our host family's compound.

Costello-Events > This might be a repeat, but this is the primary mode of travel within Cameroon (and much of Africa). This "bush taxi" holds about 20 people! Fun times when all the windows are closed, you're smushed 4 to a row, the sun is roasting you, but take heart, you only have 5 hours to go.

Costello-Events > A traditional Cameroonian kitchen. This is a separate building with two fire pits (on the right) which act as stoves. They use wood, plastic bags, corn husks, or anything else that can serve as fuel. This is one of our host sisters preparing rice.

Costello-Events > The countryside outside of Yagoua. Notice you can't see the sky for all the dust in the air (they refer to it as fog), but on a clear day it's really beautiful. Our runs are on dirt roads and paths through these fields. (Those are Mr. Watching's kids in the picture.)

Costello-Events > A traditional Muslim woman practice for the various holidays is to decorate hands and feet with henna designs. A friend of our host family painted my hand for the Ramadan holiday, but on my white skin it really only looked like a kid drew on me with a Sharpie pen!

Costello-Events > A typical view as you pass through the countryside...lots of trees and/or brush and huts within villages or lone family compounds sprinkled throughout.

Costello-Events > This really cool tree has long vines that hang down with odd, huge fruit/gourd type things at the end!

Costello-Events > Possibly another repeat, but this is the rest of a very typical traditional African kitchen. Here Mike relaxes with our host mom, or "Dada," and some unknown kid. (Various neighbors and people from the village were always hanging out at our host family's house and we never knew who they were.)
