Costello-Events > The view from the front of our B&B in Kinsale. This is the Bandon River just before it empties into Kinsale harbor. The town of Bandon is just inland of Kinsale. In the largely Roman Catholic Republic of Ireland it is said that "even the pigs are protestant in Bandon". Little Irish trivia for ya.
Costello-Events > Charles Fort overlooking the entrance to Kinsale harbor. Fortifications on this site date from 1667 with the present "Star Fort" constructed about 1681. It was an imposing structure from the sea but badly sited and easily conquered, being overlooked by high ground inland. These buildings probably date from the early 1700's.
Costello-Events > The ferry from the mainland at Passage West to Great Island in Cork Harbour on which Cobh is situated. Over 2 million Irish emigrated from Cobh (Queenstown from Queen Victoria's 1849 visit until renamed after independence in 1922). My great grandmother Mary Gavin left Ireland from Cobh in 1882 aboard the steamship "Abyssinia". She traveled alone and was 19 years old.
Costello-Events > Part of the original stonework fortification at Charles Fort, dating from 1681.
Costello-Events > St. Coleman's cathedral in Cobh. The Bishop of the diocese of Cloyne is resident here. The building was begun in 1868 and the spire was finally completed in 1915, although the first services were held in 1879. It is home to the largest carillon in Ireland at 47 bells. The Century Tower carillon at the University of Florida has 61 bells.
Costello-Events > The wonderful hosts of our B&B in Cobh, Thelma and Michael O'Sullivan. He is a Cobh native although she is (of all things) British. There is a large portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in the guest parlor, a source of some embarassment to Michael. We shared several pints with Michael at Kelly's pub (not our Kelly but a friend of Michael's) and I stayed up late into the night watching DVD's promoting Cobh tourism, in which Michael is deeply involved.
Costello-Events > This is the view of St. Coleman's in Cobh from the quay from which most of the emigres departed Ireland. As you see, it quite dominates the town and the harbor.
Costello-Events > The cathedral and round tower at Cashel, known as the "Rock of Cashel". This large stone outcropping was the home of the kings of Munster (south Ireland) until given to the church in 1101. St. Patrick is said to have baptisted King Aengus here in 432 AD, thus making him the first Christain king in Ireland. An historical fact is that Cromwell's troops burned the cathedral during the 1650's British brutality, killing the hundreds of townspeople who had sought sanctuary inside.
Costello-Events > The "Rock of Cashel" from the approach. This stone outcrop soars 200 feet above the green plain of the Tipperary countryside. One can easily see why it was a defensive fortress of kings for centuries.
