Costello-Events > The view from atop the "Rock of Cashel" to the Tipperary countryside below. After Killarney, this may be the most tourist visited spot in Ireland.
Costello-Events > The castle at Cahir, seat of the once powerful Butler family and scene of a decisive battle with the British forces of the Earl of Essex in 1599. This is said to be one of the largest and best preserved of the old castles in Ireland. That's saying a lot since there are over 2500 of 'em.
Costello-Events > This was an interesting find. Known as Portumna Castle it is not really a castle but a semi-fortified house. Built in 1618 by Richard Burke (de Burgo), the 4th Earl of Clanricarde, it was the seat of the family until gutted by fire in 1826. Maybe they moved into a trailer after the fire, I don't know. Ireland of the 1600's was a rough and tumble place and this house was designed to repel armed attack. Located in county Galway in the town of Portumna, it sits on Lough Derg. Ireland is full of unheralded, interesting finds like this.
Costello-Events > Cathy on the grounds of Portumna Castle. As you see, spring had not yet fully sprung in County Galway.
Costello-Events > One of the more than 2 million Irish who departed from Queenstown (Cobh) was 14 year old Annie Moore and her two brothers. Annie became the first immigrant processed through the new facility known as Ellis Island. Cathy hams it up with Annie and the boys.
Costello-Events > Hore Abbey as viewed from atop the Rock of Cashel. This abbey was in a field just behind our B&B.
Costello-Events > Okay, the roads in Ireland can be a challenge. First, you drive on the left. In addition, the roads can be very narrow, to the point of absurd at times. So how do you move a house there? Simple, just load 'er up and go! Now, there was a lead car which went ahead and just politely asked the oncoming traffic to pull off to the side (not always easy to find a side to pull off to) and then chat with them until the house passed. Easy! I saw this house go through a town with clearances so tight that even I clipped the left hand mirror on the rental car!
Costello-Events > This was actually Easter Sunday in Ennis. We had this "sanctuary" to ourselves, delightful candle light and a warming peat fire. It was the first (and only) cold, dreary day of our trip and the fire was wonderful. Note the ecclesiastical beverage in front of Cathy. We discovered that Easter is not the best time to visit Ireland as the pubs all close for Good Friday (some call it "black Friday"), Monday after Easter is a "bank holiday" and little is open all four days. In addition, many of the Irish hit the roads, kinda like a mega "spring break".
Costello-Events > The Ennis Friary dates from about 1284 although the religious order that established it was probably there decades earlier. So much of Irish history is defined by conquest, subjugation and religious strife. The friary was converted to Church of Ireland some time after Ireland's desecration by Cromwellian forces in the 1650's. The friary was abandoned in 1871 but remained the property of the Church of Ireland until given to the Franciscan Order in 1969 and subsequently became a Hertiage site.
