Costello-Events > On the grounds of the Lake Hotel in Killarney, Sunday, April 1, 2007. I'm talking to Erin in Boston where she and Mike had gone to visit Harvard and BU Law. Mike will be attending Harvard Divinity School in the fall and Erin BU Law.
Costello-Events > Talking to Erin in Boston from the grounds of the Lake Hotel in Killarney, Ireland, Sunday, April 1, 2007.
Costello-Events > The Cahernane House Hotel in Killarney, Ireland. We stayed here our first two nights in Ireland, March 31 and April 1, 2007. This house was built in 1877 by one of the Herberts, Earl of Pembroke. His brother owned the nearby Muckross House, a "must see" if in the Killarney area. After passage of the first land reform act in 1870, (giving tenant farmers greater rights and signaling the begining of the end of the "absentee landlord" system) this Herbert was concerned about the effect the size of his house, the largest Queen Anne style home in Ireland, would have on the populace so he tore it down and built this more "modest" home.
Costello-Events > This large outcropping was at the rear of the Cahernane House Hotel, near the carriage house. Can you find Cathy in the picture?
Costello-Events > Cathy in the music room of the Cahernane House Hotel. You little harpie you.
Costello-Events > In Kinsale we had no B&B reservation so I thought, why not ask a local? We stopped in John Coholan's butcher shop and he suggested the B&B of his friends PJ and Phyllis Crowe. We had a delightful stay in their biggest room (significant discount for cash), fortunately arriving just ahead of a van load of Japanese tourists who took three of the other rooms. PJ was a Tipperary man but Phyllis was Kinsale (Cork) born and bred. She was quite excited about my genealogical search and had many suggestions for me. We caught up with John Coholan to thank him for his suggestion just as he was closing shop. Note the delivery bicycle in the window! When's the last time you saw one of them?
Costello-Events > A hearty meal of pub food was had at the Bosun in Passage West, just before heading over to Cobh. I had just talked to my mother and learned that the Gators had defeated Ohio State for the National Championship! Again!
Costello-Events > This can't possibly convey the experience of driving in Ireland but it's a start. That is a solid granite wall thirty feet high to the left, literally inches from the yellow line. That is a sheer drop off and/or stone wall on the right. The entire road right of way is barely 12 feet wide. This is the major national highway between Killarney and Kenmare/Ring of Kerry. The posted speed limit is 100 kph (about 62 mph). I rarely got over 40 or 50 kph in this stretch! Hey, do the math, it was scary!
Costello-Events > Kinda schlocky/touristy but Cathy insisted.
